Wow, was it cold! We did a
lot of huddling around the fire in the lodge at Homer Martin Ranch.
Friday evening we stoked
up the fire, had a great pot luck dinner, played some games and
visited. Saturday morning after breakfast, Diane Blair taught about
10 of us how to tie a wooly bugger. Diane is a great teacher, and we
made several to bring home. Diane even gave each of us a nice box to
house our new flies. Then the tiers left to join Ronnie Ray and the
wade fishers. Many brave souls went wade fishing, and a few more
made it as far as the riverbank to huddle around another fire. The
fish were less than cooperative, but a good time was had by all.
Saturday evening our dear
friends, Abby Golman and Annie White, offered casting classes before
our Pot Luck dinner. After dinner, Frances Hamm announced the
winning bids from our silent auction. Frances and Lavene Jones did a
magnificent job soliciting donations and arranging them for bidding.
The auction was great fun and very profitable for the club. Items up
for bid included a Clearwater rod and reel, donated by Orvis of
Austin, a four-piece travel rod donated by Austin Angler, a fly rod
and reel donated by Dallas Fly Fishers, several chest packs donated
by Austin Outdoor Gear and Guidance, Columbia waders donated by Too Chickie, as well as an assortment of flies, books, and other gear
donated by TWFF members and others. The high bidders went home
with some great new gear obtained at bargain-basement prices, and
the TWFF coffers were increased by about $700. A huge thanks are due
to Frances for her efforts in putting together another great silent
auction!
Another great aspect of this outing was the presence of lots of
guys! Having Steve (Debi's husband), Jim (Kerri's husband), Robert
(Sheila Anderson's husband), Ronnie (Sherri's husband) and Richard (Diane's
husband) along made it even more fun. Some of them spent a good bit
of time in the kitchen, and the results were much appreciated.
Sunday
morning, we held a brief business meeting and election of officers.
We had seven e-mailed votes from members who could not come—a
special thanks to those who e-mailed in their votes. The proposed
changes to the bylaws all passed.
Our
new President is Sherri Ray; our new 2nd Vice President is Becky
Hand. Our new trustees are Sheila Anderson and Audrey Ambrose. Kerri
Stephenson and Sheila Anderson are our new historians. TWFF officers
presented a plaque to outgoing president Constance Whiston, which
was inscribed, "In appreciation to Constance Whiston, Founding
President, TWFF 2001–2003: Thank you for your innovative spirit,
your time, your dedication and your hard work for the Texas Women
Fly Fishers."
A great time was had by one and all. It is always a pleasure to meet
at Homer Martin's Ranch...no matter the weather.
